Health insurance renewal checklist for Indian families
A practical checklist for reviewing family cover, employer benefits, policy limits, hospital networks and super top-up deductibles before renewal.
UNDERSTAND YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Explore an illustrative family health-cover range using treatment city, family ages, employer cover and editable assumptions. Includes Nagpur and super top-up questions.
This is an illustration, not a promised or guaranteed return.
An editable scenario range for a conversation, not a medical, actuarial or underwriting assessment. Employer cover is shown separately.

City examples: metro ₹15 lakh, Tier-2 (including Nagpur for this tool) ₹10 lakh, Tier-3 ₹7.5 lakh. These are editable site assumptions, not local hospital-cost statistics or insurer zone classifications. Choose the place where treatment is likely to happen.
The family multiplier is 1 + 25% for each member beyond two. The age multiplier adds 25% when the eldest is 45–59, or 50% at 60 or above. The upper range is 2 times the lower range. Amounts are rounded upward to ₹1 lakh. These buffers are scenario choices, not measures of medical risk.
A family floater shares one cover limit among covered members. Multiple claims can use that limit. Age limits, family relationships, waiting periods, exclusions, room restrictions and co-payments depend on the policy.
Employer cover can change or end when employment changes. A super top-up may offer a lower-cost way to extend cover above an aggregate deductible; cost and suitability depend on policy terms. Check which claims count towards that deductible and how the base policy coordinates with it.

Start with your custom amount, or the stated city example. Multiply by 1 + (family members beyond two × family buffer).
Apply the eldest-member age buffer: no step below 45, one step at 45–59 and two steps from 60. Round upward to ₹1 lakh. The upper range is the lower range multiplied by the chosen range factor, also rounded upward to ₹1 lakh.
This is an explicit budgeting heuristic. It uses no claims dataset, disease probability, hospital quote or insurer underwriting model. Family history creates a discussion note only. Employer cover is compared with the range rather than deducted from independent cover.
No. Nagpur is a Tier-2 example in this calculator's budgeting model. Insurers may use different zones and prices. Choose the location where your family is likely to receive treatment.
No. The city amounts and age and family buffers are visible scenario assumptions. They do not measure a person's medical risk or predict treatment costs.
An employment-linked policy can change or end. It is shown separately so that a lower independent-cover amount is not inferred automatically from temporary cover.
A super top-up typically applies an aggregate deductible over the policy year before eligible expenses become payable under its terms. Check which expenses count, coordination with base cover, exclusions and co-payments.
It adds a non-diagnostic prompt to discuss higher cover and policy terms. It does not automatically change the cover estimate or decide insurer eligibility.
